Responsible Businesses & How They Guard Your Information

If you think about it, there are a lot of business and utility companies out there with a lot of your important information. Theyve got your social security number, bank account numbers, credit card numbers, your birthday and all sorts of other information that needs to stay confidential. One hopes that they go to great lengths to protect it all.

Most businesses do try and have extensive systems in place to prevent the compromise of information, but in recent years, weve all seen some large companies like TJMaxx and others have their systems undone by criminal activity. If a company handles the situation well, people will remain loyal but if they are clumsy in their dealings with their customers, their business can very well suffer with non-returning business. For most businesses, a security breach results in even more work than the average person goes through to undo the trouble. They have to work hand in hand with authorities in even telling their clients that their information was stolen. They issue press releases, and newspaper articles, yet some people are taken by surprise when they attempt to use their bank card at the grocery store and it wont process. A trip to the bank tells you theres be fraudulent activity. While this is maddening for the consumer and it is difficult to have much sympathy for the store that caused this, they take as long as they can to try to make arrests. Outside of paying cash for your purchases and losing your buyer protection, the rampant information theft of today is probably here to stay.

The government is beginning to encourage better security measures for document storage. Lets hope it works. If the stores lose, we as consumers ultimately do because prices go up to cover the extra security they need.
