The Bad Side of Identity Theft

While its bad enough that you have all your financial information and accounts stolen, and the huge hassle that goes along with it is very painful, it can get worse. Statistics say that 56% of the people who are arrested in ID theft cases actually give out your information, instead of their own, to law enforcement officials. Since it is a crime where they can get out on bail, the leave and assume a new identity. And you are left holding the bag.

Unfortunately, you may not even know that this has happened until you are stopped for speeding or a minor traffic infraction. When your drivers license is run - like they always are - it will come up that youve got an outstanding warrant for your arrest and have likely jumped bail. Now, its really a nightmare. At first, youre not likely to get much sympathy from the arresting officer, and youll definitely need a lawyer to even get you out of jail that day. After that, its a long and tedious process to prove your innocence. Once a criminal has your information, he may not use it but sell it on to others and it will keep you in their system for months or years. When you get a drivers license replaced, look at the number. It is often the same as the one that was lost or stolen so there are possibly two of you out there using that license. For some victims, the nightmare has lasted for years and has made it difficult to even find employment. Add that to being arrested now and again for someone elses criminal mischief and it begins to be the things that thrillers are made of.

The only thing one can do is take as many preventative measures as they can to see that ID theft never happens in the first place.
